By Herbert BOAKYE YIADOM, Accra
THE Premier League Board (PLB) has postponed the Macth Day 23 Premier League fixture between Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, which was scheduled for Sunday, July 16, at the Baba Yara Sports stadium.
The decision to postpone the match indefinitely follows the tragic accident involving Asante Kotoko on their way to Kumasi after their Match Day 22 League match with Inter Allies in Accra.
The PLB said it was deeply saddened by the development and expressed its deepest commiseration to Asante Kotoko.
In a release signed by Chairman of the PLB, Ashford Tettey-Oku, the PLB said “Our prayers and thoughts are with the family of Mr. Thomas Asare, the departed Assistant Equipment Manager, and we pray to the Almighty God to heal the injured players and officials.”
The PLB has also directed all club officials and players to wear black armbands for the remaining seven Match Day 23 games, which will go ahead as scheduled, except that the matches have been moved to Sunday, instead of the earlier announced Saturday. The only match on Saturday will be the televised game between Bechem United and Bolga All Stars.
The PLB has also directed the observation of a Minute silence in honour of the departed official of Kotoko before all match Day 23 premier league matches.
In a related development, DR Kwame Opoku of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), who is attending to the injured players and officials, says the players will be unfit to engage in any football related activities for the next two weeks.
The KATH doctor in an interview with the media said, “Most of the players as well as officials have suffered minor and major cuts and will have to be rested so they can recover well for the next two weeks or so. They also need a psychologist to help them through this trauma”, he added.
The Porcupine Warriors en route to Kumasi from Nkawkaw, after a 1-0 defeat to Inter Allies, run into a Kia Truck which was parked in the middle of the road.
Mr Thomas Ofosu Asare, the club’s assistant equipment officer perished in the accident.
Kotoko defender Nafiu Mohammed who was on board at the time the accident happened in an interview on Accra based Hot FM said, he is not ready to play football for the next one month and is calling on the Premier League Board to halt the league until his team mates recover.
Management members have written to the Ghana Football Association to be excluded from all football activities for the next one week.
The Finder can confirm that all players except Ollenu Ashitey and manager Steve Pollack have been discharged from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
