GTF aims to win medals at next All Africa Games

By Kenneth O. ADADE, Accra
The Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF) says it is optimistic that the 2019 All Africa Games (AAG) to be held in Equatorial Guinea will be the turning point for the sport in Ghana, and believes it can, and will, win medals for the country.

According to the Head Coach of the national taekwondo team, Steve Yeboah, GTF has put in place possible measures that would yield the needed results, starting from the AAG in 2019.
Ghana would be hosting the 2017 World Taekwondo Open Championship in Accra on Thursday, August 18 and Friday, August 19, 2017 at the rlg/Hathramani Sports Hall at the Accra Sports Stadium.
And Coach Yeboah says the upcoming championship would serve as preparatory games for the All African Games.
He said “this championship is geared towards preparing the national team and to improve upon their rankings by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) for the next All African Games.”
Mr Yeboah expressed his excitement at the fact that Ghana will be hosting the Championship, and believes it would urge them on to perform well, especially in front of their fellow Ghanaians.
He also mentioned that since the championship is an open competition, it would be prudent for other athletes to sign up for the competition, and his target as coach would be to look out for good performers who can represent the country at the All African Games.
“This is a G1 tournament, which gives you some points when it comes to seeding. So as a coach I am very happy we are hosting the championship.
“If they are able to build up points for their rankings, it would be easier to select them for the All African Games because they wouldn’t have to start from the scratch”.
The competition, dubbed WTF International Ghana Open Championship, has been sanctioned by the international body, with over 30 countries across the world participating. The competition is regarded as the biggest event in the sport.
According to the Secretary General of GTF, Charles Amofah, Ghana Taekwondo got the nod to host the championship due to efforts at promoting the sport in Ghana and Africa.
