GFA begins restructuring of Ghana football

By Daniel ODURO
The Ghana Football Association has made a bold step in its attempt to restructure the Ghana Premier League and Ghana football in general by announcing a football calendar that spans the next three football seasons.

This move is a marked departure from the period when the start and end dates of the league was unknown.
The GFA, which in recent times has struggled to get sponsorship for the Ghana League, has always been accused of lacking vision, but this new step, if followed through, will give sponsors and football fans some clarity regarding the Ghana League and other football competitions in the country.
According to the announcement made by the GFA, next season’s Ghana Premier League campaign will begin on February 11, 2018.
The league campaign is expected to run until August 5, and will be preceded by a Super Cup clash between league champions Aduana Stars and MTN FA Cup holders Kumasi Asante Kotoko on January 27.
The GFA, at their stakeholders’ summit last year, proposed a possible restructuring of the league to sync with the European calendar, and the newly announced calendar has seen that proposal come into fruition, as the 2018/2019 Ghana Premier League season will start in November and end in May 2019.
Aduana clinched the second league title in their history last season beating off close competition from WAFA and Hearts to finish with a healthy six point gap.
