Black Stars to get $5000 winning bonus

By Herbert BOAKYE-YIADOM, Accra
THE Ministry of Youth and Sports has agreed to pay $5,000 as winning bonus to the Black Stars in all tournament qualifiers from now on.

This is a sharp departure from the $10,000 usually paid to the Black Stars for competitive games.
This decision to reduce the bonuses was communicated to the media by deputy Sport Minister, Pius Hadzide last Monday.
“The government will pay an amount of $5,000 to the Black Stars for all the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying matches, and World Cup qualifying matches excluding that of World Cup tournament matches since that will be announced later.
“Notwithstanding, government will later announce a special comprehensive package which will include insurance of the players, welfare, per-diem and allowances.
“All stakeholders especially the media should cooperate and understand the current difficult economic condition of country,” he added.
Pius Hadzide, also made mention of the fact that a new package for the 2018 World Cup will be announced if the Black Stars qualify for the tournament to be staged in Russia.
The Deputy Minister also stated that the Black Stars are going to be paid in the local currency even though the amounts are quoted in US dollars.
This directive means each player will take home GH¢22,000 after their win against Ethiopia last Sunday.
“Also the system of payment has changed. Cheques are now paid directly to the players and the monies transferred into their bank accounts”.
Hadzide said the decision to slash the bonuses of the players is because of the economic difficulties in the country.
